Understanding Houston County Releases
A Houston County jail departure can mean release to the community, but it can also mean transfer to another authority. The official In Custody page is a current roster. A person who is no longer shown may have posted bond, received a court-ordered release, completed a local sentence, entered Minnesota Department of Corrections custody, or moved under another warrant or detainer. Roster absence by itself does not choose among those outcomes.
The strongest local proof comes from the permanent jail record that identifies when and by what authority a person was liberated. Minnesota Court Records Online can explain the legal event, while Minnesota VINE may record a release or transfer notification. For a state commitment, the MN DOC Public Viewer becomes the correct locator. These sources form a chain because no single screen answers the physical, legal, and supervision questions in every Houston County case.
Houston County Release Types
Release language must be read with the authority and destination attached. A bond release leaves the criminal case pending, and probation is not the same as Minnesota supervised release after prison. A dismissal may support release only when no other hold exists. The following distinctions determine which official system should be checked next.
| Record entry | Meaning | Next place to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or conditional release | The person leaves local custody under court terms while the case continues. | Houston County court docket and sheriff liberation entry |
| Time served or sentence complete | The local custodial part is satisfied, subject to any other valid hold. | Sheriff record and sentencing order |
| Probation or stayed sentence | The court orders community supervision instead of, or after, custody. | MCRO and the responsible probation office |
| DOC commitment | The person leaves the county jail for state correctional custody. | MN DOC Public Viewer after intake |
| Transfer or detainer | Another county, federal agency, or other authority receives the person. | Receiving agency and the transfer entry |
| Dismissal or acquittal | The case event can authorize release but does not clear unrelated holds. | Court disposition plus actual jail exit record |
Escape and death are separate status changes and must never be labeled releases. Minnesota VINE also distinguishes release, transfer, and escape notices, so preserving the exact wording matters.
Houston County Release Record Fields
Minnesota Statutes section 641.05 requires the sheriff to keep a permanent record for each person committed to jail. Its release anchor is the entry showing when the person was liberated and the authority for liberation. A jail-management extract may contain more fields, but the exact labels depend on what Houston County maintains and releases as public data.
| Field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Name and booking number | Ties the event to the correct custody episode rather than a same-name person. |
| Admission date and time | Marks the start of that Houston County jail stay. |
| Commitment authority | Identifies the court, warrant, or other basis for confinement. |
| Liberation date and time | Records when Houston County custody ended. |
| Liberation authority | Shows the legal basis for the departure, such as bond, order, or sentence satisfaction. |
| Release type or receiving agency | Distinguishes community release from a transfer when the field is maintained. |
| Charge and case reference | Connects the booking to the matching court proceeding without proving conviction. |
| Property disposition | Documents handling of inventoried belongings at discharge when present. |
Permanent retention applies to the statutory jail record, not to every web page, video, medical record, call, or vendor display. Other material can follow different schedules and access classifications. The public record can also omit medical, safety, informant, investigative, and security-sensitive details under Minnesota law.
Request Houston County Release Records
The Houston County Sheriff’s Office maintains the county jail record. Begin at the Sheriff’s current records-request link or the county Public Data Requests section, especially while county web addresses are changing. A narrow, booking-specific request is easier to identify and less likely to include protected material.
- Provide the full name plus a booking date, booking number, case number, or year of birth needed to distinguish the person.
- Ask for the section 641.05 entry showing the date and time liberated and the authority by which liberation occurred.
- Request the public release-type or receiving-agency field if Houston County maintains one, and say whether a transfer should be separated from community release.
- Ask for electronic copies and request a cost estimate before authorizing any substantial copy or certification charge.
- If a field is withheld, ask the responsible authority to identify the governing statute and provide segregable public data.
The Sheriff’s Office is at 306 South Marshall Street, Suite 1100, Caledonia, Minnesota 55921, and its main number is 507-725-3379. Inspection of public government data is generally available without a copy charge, while copies, certified records, media, and special formats may carry lawful fees under the live county schedule. Section 13.03 calls for an appropriate, prompt response at reasonable times and places; it does not create one universal three-day deadline for ordinary public requests.
Houston County Release Data Law
The Minnesota Government Data Practices Act supplies the general access framework. Section 13.03 governs access to public data, and section 13.04 covers a person’s access to data about that person. Corrections and detention data are classified more specifically by section 13.85. Public arrest categories and booking photographs are addressed in section 13.82, while the permanent liberation entry comes from section 641.05.
Expungement is governed by Chapter 609A and related access rules. A sealed or expunged case can disappear from ordinary remote access without proving that every government record was destroyed. No universal waiting period applies to every case. The affected person or authorized counsel should use the Minnesota Judicial Branch expungement forms and ask the court and maintaining agency how an order applies to the specific record.
Record scope: Public status does not make sealed, juvenile, medical, or safety-sensitive information available.
Houston County Release Property
What happens to personal property at discharge is a distinct Houston County release issue, not a roster-search detail. Minnesota Statutes section 641.15 requires the sheriff to restore a confined person’s personal clothing upon discharge. Minnesota jail standards also address property inventories and receipts. The same statute includes state photo-identification assistance in its applicable release-planning setting.
A missing item or incorrect liberation entry should be raised with jail administration through a focused records or correction request. The current web roster is not the master property log. Ask for the booking-specific inventory, receipt, and public disposition data that Houston County maintains, while recognizing that protected information may be removed.
Find Houston County Released Inmates
A named-person search begins with the custody that may have ended. Timestamp each live observation and keep the case or booking identifiers nearby. The sequence below avoids treating a blank result as proof.
- Check the Houston County In Custody roster. If the person is listed, release from the county jail has not been established.
- If absent, search Minnesota Court Records Online and restrict the person search to Houston County criminal or citation cases. Read entries around the disappearance date.
- Check Minnesota VINE for the selected county record. Preserve whether the event says release, transfer, or escape.
- When the docket shows commitment to the Commissioner of Corrections, search the MN DOC Public Viewer after allowing for intake lag.
- Use BOP or ICE only when the case facts point to federal or immigration custody. A local roster departure does not by itself justify either search.
- Request the permanent sheriff record for booking-specific liberation time, authority, and any public receiving-agency field.
For a recent event, VINE, the latest court order, and a narrow phone inquiry can give quick corroboration. For an event months or years old, skip the active roster and start with the court case and permanent record. A copied roster or commercial mugshot page is weaker because it may preserve a booking without a verified ending.
MN DOC Released Inmate Search
The MN DOC Public Viewer covers adults committed to the Commissioner of Corrections who remain under DOC jurisdiction, whether imprisoned or released from prison while supervised. It is not a Houston County jail archive. Someone who bonded out, completed a local misdemeanor term, or received county probation without state commitment may never appear.
| Search or result field | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Name | Search exact first and last name, then broaden carefully for justified spelling variants. |
| OMNI identifier | Prefer the unique DOC number when known. |
| Status | Distinguish incarceration, community supervision, and expiration or discharge. |
| Location or field office | A prison points to custody; a field office can point to release under supervision. |
| Supervised release date | Marks the prison-to-community transition, not final sentence expiration. |
| Expiration or conditional date | Read the exact label because each date answers a different legal event. |
The official viewer screen shows the state search interface and illustrates why the exact Minnesota field label controls.
A result should be matched back to the Houston County court case because a DOC profile can aggregate more than one sentence. If the court clearly imposed state commitment but the person is absent, allow for processing lag or request public admission, release, status, and discharge data through MN DOC Data Practices.
Houston County Recent Release Search
Houston County does not publish an official rolling recent-release feed, release-date filter, or online archive. Its official page is labeled In Custody, and the Sheriff describes it as an incarcerated-inmates roster. There are no official feed fields, refresh cadence, or online retention period to report. Claims that a released entry remains visible for a set number of hours are unsupported.
For a time-window request, state exact start and end timestamps and ask for existing public jail data showing name, booking number if public, liberation time, and authority or release type. Tell the Sheriff whether transfers should be included or placed in a separate group. The Data Practices Act gives access to existing data; it does not force Houston County to create a new dashboard that it does not maintain. The dedicated Jail Releases: 24 Hours page applies this method to a same-day interval.
Note: A roster comparison is a lead, while the permanent liberation entry is the durable Houston County record.
Houston County Court Release Proof
Houston County criminal matters belong to Minnesota’s Third Judicial District. Unlike the active jail roster, the court case can remain available after the booking entry disappears. The register of actions may show bond, release conditions, dismissal, time served, probation, a warrant, an amended sentence, or commitment to the Commissioner of Corrections.
The Houston County District Court page is the official route for local court contact and certified-copy guidance. MCRO supplies convenient remote access, but an order is not always the precise moment jail staff completed the physical exit. Pair the legal authority in the docket with the Sheriff’s section 641.05 liberation entry. If an entry says commitment to the Commissioner, look for DOC intake rather than calling the jail departure freedom.
Houston County Release Supervision
Minnesota uses several terms that should not be merged. Probation is imposed by a court and may be administered through DOC Field Services or another authorized system. Supervised release is the community part of many state prison sentences. Parole is most apt for older indeterminate or life-sentence review matters within the Minnesota Supervised Release Board’s authority.
Houston County contracts with MN DOC for probation services, and its local corrections office is in the Justice Center. Verify the court order in MCRO first. For a person committed to the Commissioner, use the Public Viewer to check status and field office, then consult the official field-services directory. The local supervision path includes the probation office, active-fugitives route, board scope, and final discharge distinction.
Houston County Release Notifications
Houston County participates in Minnesota VINE for county-jail events. VINELink registration is tied to one selected person and can report release, transfer, or escape. The county warns that VINE should not be the sole safety measure, and a historical result may not stay searchable. Save the record identifier, exact status, event time, and confirmation without exposing a phone number, email address, or PIN.
The official VINELink screen shows the gateway to Minnesota’s person-specific custody search.
MN DOC uses Minnesota Haven, not county VINE, for prison and community-supervision notice. Haven can send specified custody, release, agent, and expiration notices after registration through the DOC Victim Assistance program. Do not carry VINE’s phone-PIN instructions into Haven because their registration and delivery processes differ.
Federal Houston County Release Search
A federal custody search belongs to a different system. The Bureau of Prisons locator can return current federal prisoners and many former federal prisoners, sometimes with “Released” and a date. “Not in BOP custody” does not prove that the person is free of U.S. Marshals, state, local, or immigration custody. USMS has no general public historical released-prisoner locator, so a federal docket, counsel, the responsible district, or an official record request may be needed.
The BOP Inmate Locator demonstrates the federal name and register-number search route.
ICE’s locator focuses on current civil immigration detention and is not a complete historical release register. A blank result can reflect spelling, lag, a transfer, or coverage limits. No ICE facility or detention contract in Houston County was identified in the reviewed official sources. If the Sheriff’s record shows an immigration handoff, confirm it through ICE’s locator or responsible field office without describing the transfer as community release.
Compare Houston County Release Sources
The system should match both the person’s custody type and the question being asked. Current location, physical exit, legal authority, and sentence expiration are separate facts.
| Source | Best use | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Houston County In Custody | Check whether a person is currently shown in the county jail. | No official released-person archive or time window. |
| Sheriff permanent record | Confirm booking-specific liberation time and authority. | Requires a public-data request when not posted. |
| MCRO | Find the bond, order, sentence, dismissal, or commitment behind custody. | May not state the physical door-out minute. |
| MN DOC Public Viewer | Locate state prisoners and released people still under DOC jurisdiction. | Not a county jail archive; full discharge can end public-viewer coverage. |
| Minnesota VINE | Receive a selected county record’s release, transfer, or escape event. | Person-specific notification, not a browseable permanent release list. |
| BOP or ICE | Follow supported federal or immigration custody facts. | Neither proves release from all other authorities. |
Why did the person vanish from the roster? The live list is designed to show present Houston County custody, while the permanent jail record preserves the ending. Disappearance becomes meaningful only after another official source identifies release, transfer, or a different event.
Which Houston County Jail Released Them?
Historic Houston County jail material can point to the wrong building. The Sheriff’s history says the original jail, built in 1875, held prisoners and the sheriff’s family. It was listed on historic registers and was described as Minnesota’s oldest operating licensed jail before it closed in October 2011. Its stated maximum capacity was 14 adult men.
Modern Houston County release records and exit questions belong to the current jail in the Justice Center, not the historic structure. A photo of the old jail should not be treated as today’s custody or release location. The Sheriff’s current page, jail administration, In Custody roster, and records-request channel control present-day searches.
Houston County Release Facility
Houston County Jail is the sole adult detention facility identified as operated by the county. It can release a person to the community, transfer the person to another agency, or send a defendant committed to the Commissioner into Minnesota DOC custody. The facility page explains its contact details, programs, VINE route, permanent record, booking-photo request, and modern release location.
No state prison is located in Houston County. A state sentence can place a Houston County defendant elsewhere in Minnesota, and the Public Viewer’s current location controls. Federal prison and ICE detention also use their own nationwide systems. Geographic connection to the court case does not turn those facilities into Houston County jails.
